finding Unicorns

So the other day a tune comes on Deep Tracks that I hadn’t heard in ages (one reason I listen to the sat radio channel). It was “No Way Out of Here” and the band was Unicorn. It didn’t sound quite like I remembered, so I figured that is was a cover tune. A little research back at home revealed that the version I’d heard in the past was from a David Gilmour solo album in ’77, and in fact the version played on Deep Tracks was the original by a band called Unicorn. One good thing about youtube is that you can find a lot of legacy music and indeed, Unicorn was there (though interestingly, no wikipedia entry and only a single fan site that looks like it was mostly build in the mid ’00’s).

Checking out some other tracks indicated that Unicorn was actually a bit ahead of their time and a pretty damn good band. Listening to them you can hear Poco, Pure Prairie League, CSN&Y, Byrds, and a number of other influences. But they were Brits. Go figure. So their last album “Too Many Crooks” is strong, and there also was a reissued “best of” that came out around ’00.
