Part performance art, part narrative experiment, part conspiracy busting, this is a great example of weaponizing satire in the fight against stupidity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One challenge though &#8211; in some ways satire is dead in our society, so not clear how broadly applicable this story is in today&#8217;s world. Years ago, Matt and Trey (South Park creators) noted that, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2017\/02\/south-parks-creators-are-giving-up-on-satirizing-trump\/515616\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">satire has become reality<\/a>.&#8221; That makes for a world where it can be tough to use humor to negate the crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it should be noted that youth seemed to instantly get the Birds Aren&#8217;t Real messaging, so maybe there is hope that the generations coming up will bring a sensibility that enables fact and fiction to be examined, discerned, and understood through critical thinking &#8211; that includes a healthy dose of satirical thought and action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A piece on The Guardian discusses the fascinating story of the &#8220;Birds Aren&#8217;t Real&#8221; movement.
