falling down

Is a new month a new beginning or just a failure to stop or yield? I wish I had something deep and contemplative to say but in fact I don't. Rather a 3" thick notebook filled with details on explosions and bad things done by bad people. And I'm supposed to make that entertaining and educational. Hell, I don't even know if I can make it somnabulistic. Whatever that means.

I don't know what that means...but I liked it.

spring break

Not for me. That is an ancient concept. Sadly the boy is stuck at work with dad. It's no Ft Lauderdale...

x-box

The one upside of having to spend the day at work with dad is that dad works at a pretty cool place. A colleague, seeing the boy somewhat bored, set up his X-Box 360 along with a full complement of games. That softened the blow of dad being tied up in meetings all day. Halo 3 is a sweet substitute.

kneeding your back

Finally back to tai chi class after a layoff due to the back injury. Perhaps old dogs can be taught new tricks (eventually) as going slow with limited bending was the name of the game for the evening. Interesting though as when you favor one part of the body (back) other parts end up taking more of a hit (knee) and once again the law of conservation of pain is illustrated.

sublime doesn't come cheap

A celebration is in order, as st is now officially a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow. I'm in awe. So it is only fitting to have awe-inspiring food to honor the announcement. That means The Hump at Santa Monica airport. First course was sea conch and shitake mushroom in a bonito broth - served in the conch shell.

student teacher

The best way to learn is by teaching. That is assuming a high level of safety beforehand, but evidently his training has been good so far.

April 13, 2009

not yet

It's now been 3 weeks since tweaking the back. While walking is mostly done in an upright position, it still "ain't right." Of course I really want to get back on 2-wheels, so I rode into work today. Turns out that is a mistake. You don't realize how much banging around your body gets on a motorcycle. Well, you do realize when you're injured. So back in the garage it goes. More exercises and rest. Sigh. Could be worse.

did he really say that?

My local Congressional representative Henry Waxman supposedly said the following:

"If someone is so fearful that they’re going to start using their weapons to protect their rights, makes me very nervous that these people have these weapons at all!”

lies, damn lies, and statistics

"90% of the drug cartel weapons were purchased in the US..."

So say a number of politicians. But like any good statistic, one should really look a bit deeper at the numbers. When does 17% become 90%? Perhaps when someone has an agenda. To whit:

throttling

So what are your options when your subcontractor doesn't communicate with you, is incompetent, and then goes to the sponsor saying the deadline will be missed? How about throttling them? Hmm, works for me. What an interesting term though...throttle. Say it five times fast - throttle throttle throttle throttle throttle.

That would be "program review," not the more common perilous relish abbreviation. All day dog-and-pony, some of it scripted, some of it improv, the rest just...hmm...I don't know. The hoops we jump through to make a buck and train them up.

slowly back

Finally able to bend - sort of. Swinging a sword goes ok, but my knees aren't 40 any more. Haven't been for, oh, 7 years or so.

horizontal bop

Another day, another trip to the chiro to try and fix things that go "pop" in the night. The orders to either be horizontal or walking. Well that's just fine for today...but how will that work on a plane to the east coast next week? Answer: it won't.
