surfin' bird

...it pours...
Well, maybe not for me. First day of 8th grade for the boy.
Another pair of PIF gigs today, but this time with me on the hook as "leader." It is a love/hate thing for me. I like having control over some aspects of things, and I'm good at logistics and making things happen. I'm a bit more reluctant as the bandleader and schmoozer. Actually I'm fine on stage, and I had a few funny jokes today. The downside was not having chart books delivered to me like they were supposed to be (not my fault). But ever the boy scout (um, not really) I had copied a couple of charts just in case. And it was in case. But in the end the audience was happy, no one got hurt (well, one minor cut on my hand - no roadies), and I'll live to lead another day.
How many times can I have this title? I guess as many times as I drive north to Pendleton...but I have my proper contractor pass now. Sassy.
In the studio. The end of summer, so to speak (though there was little summer to be had in Santa Monica this year), and it ends with funk rehearsal in Hollywood. Semper funkus...
Hmm, no gigs this weekend. And rehearsal moved from Sunday to Monday. Saturday and Sunday with nothing scheduled. Weird.
I've been here before. And I don't really care for it...
One set, three basses? Why the hell not...
Let's see, rehearse past midnight last night, 5am alarm, 6:55am flight, crunch the rental car (thank you, LDW), drive 1.5 hours, 3 hours of meetings, drive 1.5 hours, sit in Schlotsky's for an hour or two (free wireless), sit in airport for an hour or two (free wireless), 8:20pm flight back, finally home around 11:00pm.
Fun times...
Another night, another ensemble. This time jazz trio with an option for more pieces. We (Gary and I) tried a few drummers a few weeks back and none really clicked. This did, so no to find the gigs to play...
Yes, again. After all, it is part of what I do. Sometimes feels like about all I do...
Another jazz gig tonight, this time at a small cafe in Topanga. I didn't know who the drummer was going to be - Gary just said he had a good player. When I arrived lo and behold it was Tony G., who I played with on and off many years back in Pasadena. Used to have a semi-regular gig at a restaurant on Lincoln in west Pas. Old musicians never die, they just get a different gig.
Another unfunded mandate (though I suppose I do get paid for doing "stuff" and that is often broadly construed). Cutting video loops for use in the 2nd floor displays. Concept? Hmm, no time. Elegant? Hmm, no time. Will it work? Yes - I have time.
at the beach - complete with lanterns. xie xie st
And this time with more passion. Or something like that.
Or men via corporations. Evil, evil, evil. Here's hoping that karma is in fact a b*tch...
