Sometimes you gotta record on location. I've used small MD recorders, but they compress the snot out of the sound. OK for talking, not OK for music (unless you don't have anything else). For more serious location work, here's what we use:
Apple G4 Titanium Powerbook 800Mhz, 40Gig HD
Various external Firewire HDs
MOTU 896 and/or 828 Firewire interface
Logic v6
Digidesign 002r/MBox
Digidesign ProTools LE v6
Glyph M Project 40Gig HD (rack mount)
Prosonus Digimax 8-channel mic preamp
Prosonus ACP-80 8-channel compressor
Summit TLA-50 Tube compressor
Summit TD-100 Tube preamp/direct box
1 THE KA-04/KR33A condenser mic
4 Oktava MC-012 condenser mics (one matched pair)
1 Oktava MC-219 condenser mic
1 Audio Technica 3035 condenser mic
1 Shure SM-57 dynamic mic
1 Rode NT-4 stereo mic
1 Audio Technica stereo mic
For up to 8 tracks, we generally use the Digimax preamps since they have limiters. Then take the lightpipe out into the MOTO firewire interface. That leaves the onboard preamps on the MOTU available for use. Tracking is done using Logic.
