6 questions

A piece from MIT Technology Review looking at 6 questions that will surround generative AI in 2024. For the tl;dr crowd:

  1. will it mitigate bias?
  2. what about copyright?
  3. how will it change our jobs?
  4. what misinformation will it enable?
  5. what about the costs?
  6. will doomerism dominate policymaking?

#6 is clearly in our wheelhouse and is a bit of a mess at the moment. You have a couple of different camps forming – those that think AI is an imminent existential threat on one side, and those that think that threat is overhyped and instead we should focus on near-term issues (like the first 5 above). Seems that one could be in both camps as it likely have near-term as well as existential long-term threats. But different policies will lead to different winners and losers, and stakes are high. Regardless, AI is not going away.
