Something I didn't blog about when it happened...a Pelican friend died yesterday morning. I met Howard a couple of times on drives, having broken bread with him in Thousand Oaks a few years ago. A truly great guy, he lived life large and on his own terms. When news of a brain aneurism came to the board a week or two ago, everyone chimed in with their prayers and best wishes. The updates were encouraging following surgery, but early Saturday morning we were greeted with the sad news that Howard had passed.
Evidently he had a major stroke at some point during the ordeal, and it was evident that he would never be Howard again. So the family make the decision to remove the ventilator, and after he went to sleep, Howard passed over.
Then today news of two young girls hit while crossing the street in El Serreno. The driver fled the scene. The irony being that S commented about how dangerous the street was just minutes before C and I left. So some tonglen practice (which I'm not particularly good at). At least I had a headstart, taking C to Shambhala this morning as it was "family day", with the center providing activities for kids so adults can sit.
Life is short and precious. Love openly and deeply. Cherish the small things. And may Grace find us all.
