wall-e

Finally got to see wall-e tonight. I make no secret of the fact that I'm a huge Pixar fan, and think that they are pretty much the best story tellers going right now. Yes, I know that they tell essentially the same story over and over again, but the fact that they do it in fresh and entertaining ways shows that they are very, very good.

The movie has a 96% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, which is pretty unheard of. Of course there are a few who don't care for it. Face it...usually critics are those who don't have the guts or the chops to actually create art in the first place. So once you accept that, dealing with what amounts to "gee, look how clever I am" prose rants become a bit easier to swallow.

I have some technical issues with the plot in the end, but in all found the movie to be quite good. Unlike some, I guess I was able to see both plot and character development without dialogue. Maybe I'm just telepathic or something...or perhaps narrative doesn't require spoken word. Naw, couldn't be that...

I do agree with criticism that the second half of the film was a shift/drop in approach and quality. But still entertaining. The messages are myriad, and the aesthetic, as usual, far beyond any other animation studio (and most film studios). Pixar knows how to get a "look." With a few script changes to the climax and denouement, the film would have been impeccable. As it is, I found it quite good for Pixar (meaning better than most other films), but "Bug's Life" is still my favorite.
