vegas, baby
St treats for my b-day. A road trip to Vegas to see the closing show of the Dukes of September tour. A one-night stay at the Hard Rock. Interesting place. More on that in another diatribe. For now, pretty surreal colors.

Steely Jamming at Redondo Beach pier.
Well, Dulles actually...
Unlike the last few gigs, a club date with a 30 minute time slot. This time with the IDC funk band, and going on at 8:30. By contrast, the jazz/sad bastard gigs (with Sam) are very low stress, and usually very long - easily go 4 hours of playing. The PIF gigs are a little tighter at usually a 75 minute set or so, but again very low stress and no competition - just playing for an appreciative audience.
Tonight though - have 30 minutes to make your mark, and there are other bands following. Maybe it is wrong of me, but in these cases my goal is to go for the throat and make it so that the other bands can't really follow you. And we pretty much did just that. No messing around, no long breaks between songs, and we cranked it out. They told us "one more song" when we had 4 more, so we picked the last tune, finished it, and the crowd wanted more. So on to the encore, and really go in for the kill. Fun times...
Long time not shoot...
Gotta get outta town. So north to Solvang. Why? Why not...pack up the bike and off we went. And who knew that Ocean Bl would actually go to the ocean (and Vandenburg AFB).
How about 80 degrees and rain? That's FL for ya. Time spent in the convention center with millions and millions of dollars worth of military industrial complex toys on display. Never boring...
And again...and again. This time to Florida. At least it won't be snowing...
Lotsa Cuban...an other stuff
Bad enough having to drive in the dark through it last night from Logan to Natick. But it is still here...and it's cold!
But with wifi - Virgin America rocks.
I'm in AZ, but my mind might be elsewhere...
Some Calvin art from awhile back - long shutter and a laser pointer.
The rains pass for the day but winter remains. A bit of fire and ice...
And why not...
Morning on the sand, afternoon on the hill
Band promo photos for Nasty Habits, Nov 1981
THC circa 1979
Stranded by snow...in Houston! Landed early and sat on the tarmack while snowflakes fell. Upon turning the cell phone back on there was a voicemail from Southwest - "your flight to New Orleans is cancelled." So there you have it. A long wait in line at the airport but things worked out in the end. A cheap stay in the Hilton overnight and a morning flight out. That delays work by a day, but hopefully we won't need it. Time will tell...
Hike? Why not...
A longer than anticipated bit of free time, so off to the hills to enjoy the crisp sunshine.
An awesome belated b-day present for Mr. Tse. Altered reality with a Steely Dan soundtrack.
Post-storm fog in the 'hood.
Nice place for a wedding. Or most anything for that matter. I'm certainly not a wedding photographer in the strict sense. But then who wants to be strict?
And a couple random crops
Not sure about your village, but this one has lanterns and moon cakes...
Even if you're sick you can walk around and take pictures. Avoiding others of course...
And associated environs. Digging in the dirt...
along with a few other shots
One of the first entrants to the new place, today basking in some afternoon sun filtered through prayer flags.
Not today, but a guy can dream...
On foot. Zoom experimenting.
Leaving, but not Las Vegas. Don't forget to leave a light on...
High desert, not Joshua Tree. I could tell you where, but...well, you know...
Thumbing my nose at persistent malaise, a trip to the desert to witness a wedding.
2 wheels through Joshua Tree.
Sometimes photos float back into your transom. Shots from Sawtelle interiors.
Extra points if you get that reference. Thought st would appreciate these.
I suppose a construction site is a construction site. But this one happens to be in Ridgecrest, CA
When is a short week a long week? When it is...
Not sure why, but I like this view
For some reason I like this tree a lot - I have yet to really capture it though
One of the more depressing or interesting places to be depending on your point of view.
I feel a series coming on...
I only have a few more hours to clean...egad
A field trip to moca with other meanderings included. Clay is fun.
arrggh...
A tale of three images - no meddling, some meddling, and a lot of meddling (with SilverEfx Pro)
Angeles Crest Hwy to Angeles Forest Hwy to Lancaster and back again. Complete with a Meineke Muffler shop grand opening extravaganza with car show!
I remember those days...
Air temp: 80F
Water temp: 53F
Winds: offshore at 5-15mph
Swell: NW groundswell 2-3'
Just another January afternoon...
Now in profile
I do like this bathroom...for the purpose of pictures that is.
If only it were a foot or two bigger...how many times have I thought that?
Manual focus can be a bit intrusive, but good glass is good glass...
The end of the holidaze...and not quite enough sleep recouped. But that's how it usually works...
Ringing out the old, ringing in the new. With fire and good company.
The last day of 2008, fading light at the playground. Nothing deep to say other than 2008 has been an interesting year with some great times and I can't really complain. It could be a lot worse...
Still fascinated by reflections and haunted by a clinical past
Finally off the couch and onto the bike.
In a variety of ways
Of one sort or another...
too much food...but somehow it gets eaten
There is something here, just not quite getting it yet.
true...it is thursday
see, there are alternatives to video games...
When you're feeling...umm...something, you buy a new lens. Well, I do...Pentax 43ltd prime.
A ride around Palos Verdes, with the challenge being to avoid being blown off the road.
Well, end of week anyway. And a long one it was...time for a walk with a lens.
view from my hotel room, thankfully winging my way back to CA. At least the beer was good...
Shaken, not stirred
The airport at least. On the road to Orlando via ORD. What is that white stuff on the ground?
One side clear, the other cotton candy. Then hot, then cold. Temperature and spice. Go figure.
Plenty to be thankful for, including spending the day first on the road (on 2), and then with friends old and new. T-day at the ranch.
Not Italy, but rather LA, b-day party, cold west wind, fast lens.
you can see forever
Neighborhood bars can be cool. SF was full of them. The westside - not so much. But there is one...still trying to figure out the scoop on it, but they sure make a great hoagie. And no driving necessary..just a walk past the tailors.
A rare fit of rain, so what better to do than hop on the bike and chase the falling sun.
A rare schedule change combined with a new tool in the visual stable. Gotta rtfm now...
While standing in line to get lunch at Chipotle, I was shooting pictures of the ductwork up in the ceiling. Until the manager came and told me to stop taking pictures. Bastards...like this is going to hurt their business or is infringing on their IP.
An up and down night, but certainly the ups were way up. Note to self (and others): if a horn player throws a fit and walks about in the middle of the set, don't call them back. One thing is for sure, st gets some great shots...
Many miles traveled, paved and dirt (and sand). Holcomb Valley (and almost a dirt nap for the bike), Lucerne Valley (the desert is an interesting place), and multiple summits. A great day in the saddle.
You know it has been a good trip (and a great bike) when the response to, "how are you doing?" is, "I don't think I'm done riding yet..."
Casting shadows in Malibu
Heading to Big Bear on the bike. Traffic was a nightmare getting out of town, exacerbated by 100+ F temps and slow lanestpitting. But eventually the elevation climbed, most cars didn't, and we were rolling in to Big Bear Lake (the town, not the lake itself).
Love the accidently iPhone shots...not sure what this was.
random views from the park in late summer
I know they talk about blue water, but from the fake stream? Scary...LA has followed us!
Sometimes the sun going down is more scenic
Not retouched - just a tad of crop. Nature rocks.
funny what happens when you walk on the opposite side of the alley...
The 35mm ltd macro lens that I've been waiting for showed up today. Ran out of light, but a few quick snaps/crops. Tomorrow it gets a proper workout...
heading into yosemite valley
Sleep would be nice. I have to write this proposal mod first though. And sort out another project. And arrange for playtesting the beta version of the game. And get logos and templates to people. And log footage. And figure out what "edu in '08" really means.
And sleep.
i love this lens
The lens that is...77mm ltd. No plastic to been seen anywhere. Old school.
Full flight. Last four hours with seatbelts fastened. Arrive half hour early but sit on plane and wait for customs to open. Motion sickness bad. Really bad. Boy sick too. This too shall pass...
I'm not sure, but I think these shots kinds of make me feel ill. Weird...
Took this today, but didn't think it would be quite so prescient. The tranny cost how much to fix?!? I always knew that I couldn't afford to race forever...
sometimes life's a blur
and other times it is black and white...
Well, a little late with the red but I'm stepping and fetching the best I can. Natural fireworks found on the way to Peets today
new year, new shots, new language? How many tones?!?
in black and white
A day and night full of it. Traffic being the only impediment. And some of it in color...
Ugh. Survival is an 8 letter word.
16x9. No crop involved. Lots to learn though. Always the case, right?
No, not my favorite commercial, but big bubbles on the beach in baja.
Quite the hike down, but despite some cactus bites, certainly worth the trip.
Not necessarily in that order. More shots of a random nature from Punta Bunda and points beyond. The tacos are from Tacos Poblano in Maneadero. Took awhile to find but worth the search. The rest are right outside the door...if you look.
Random bits and I don't remember what they are as I'm somewhat timeshifted between shooting and posting. Now more sunscreen and Moots.
xmas amongst the natives. Not many gringos on the plaza today, save the one guy clearly relieved to see me so he could ask where the blowhole was. "no habla ingles."
Hey, this could have been your job for the day...somebody decided to run over the fire hydrant outside my office today. Ain't it purty?
Played a wedding on a boat last night. 'Twas for a good friend of Harry's. Was good to get out of the usual rut and make the road trip to San Diego. Beautiful night on the water. Funny to be what appeared to be the only not-paired-off person in the place. I did get to find out that my behavior at the '00 Steely Dan concert has lived on in infamy (I don't like it when people have a conversation about their trip to Mexico during the middle of "Time Out of Mind"). Was fine though...I have the view.
Bringing in a couple of keys...
More projects on the pile. And pitches to write. Treatments to sort. Stories to break. Buckle up kids, it's going to be a very wild month...
A long day of talking, listening, and pitching. It's hard to raise something up. Plenty of ideas, but finding the money...yes, that is the trick. At least I took a break to shoot some stills (as opposed to the interviews). Utah is beautiful, but a bit odd for a native SoCal Buddhist boy...
Yes, it's the old shoot'n'fly. Noon call down in Anaheim to shoot the scripted parts of the current production, then off to LAX to head for Logan, UT. We wrapped early so the plan of getting dropped off didn't quite work. Did give a chance to do a few more errands before driving down to Park One and walking to Terminal 1 at LAX. It is convenient...
somewhere over nowhere, heading east
A few shots from Saturday's adventure. Flying solo in the 911 through the rain drops, 4:30am call heading north, sunset heading back. Taken on my iPhone.
a very good night. bright and sonic
every feel like this? Bejing on the run at night...
Submitted without comment...
Well, last night in Beijing. Today was a long and tough day of work, but we actually hit it out of the park in the afternoon session, with our breakout group (nicknamed "happy group") taking an episode and actually creating the game play. With a user interface even. I was in storyboard mode from last night (another project I can't talk about), so once we picked an episode, I blurted out "space invaders" and I was off to the board and markers to start drawing. And it is good. Everyone in the group was happy (hence our group name), even the edu-types.
After that it was Peking Duck for dinner. Then packing. Now blogging. Next sleep (hopefully). Then the long flight back to LA. Catch you on the other side...of the Pacific that is. Hai, tai gui le!
Well, I had written a bunch in my head, but had no network access. I know that isn't an excuse, but I had slacking to do. So instead I just offer various photos taken over the past few days. A couple have to do with technology's intrusion into paradise (broadly construed). Kind of unnerving to have the pole-mounted speakers everwhere (to warn of nuclear "incident" at Diablo Canyon), along with a paragraph in the hotel's guide telling you what to do if you hear the siren (um, what part of "kiss your ass goodbye" don't I understand?). So without further adieu...Sycamore Springs and environs. And you can view more if you're a glutton here and here.
Calvin had a great idea. The beach. OK.
Our meetings were held in Duncan Hall on the Campus of Rice University. Go Owls! Or not. Interesting architecture and colors, but to be honest in person it was a bit of an assault on the senses. At least they had open wireless...
Buddha, Jesus, and a lawn gnome with an axe. Not quite sure what to make of that, but offered for your perousal...
Sometimes it is hard to get a shot because of movement. Timing is everything. Luck is a big part. So is patience.
i love the green in this...
Feel like this sometimes? Hey, it's alive too...
cold and late to the party. got in a few though...
a hand would be nice right about now, but none really to be found. part of the process i suppose. when it's yours, it's yours alone...until it isn't.
Long day in the saddle, as it was a road trip to Volcanoes National Park. About 8+ hours, 100+ miles each way. But it was worth it...while you can see a lot in LA, this you can't see.
On some level it makes me very sad, but on another level, how can you turn down an opportunity for your son to actually to hang out with a dolphin for a half hour. So this afternoon the boy did the "Dolphin Adventure" here at the Hilton Waikoloa Acid Trip. A hefty chunk of money (hey, charge it to the room...) gets him in a lagoon with four other people, a trainer, and a very tame dolphin. They seem pretty respectful of the animals at least, but it still bothers me to see wild animals jumping for their supper. Hmm, maybe another data point here too...
Enough words...time for some pics
Just a few pics to post, some from the early Am before the tutorial session, then a few after it was over. The meat of the day was spent helping to educate the world (oh, ok...about 20 or so) on the virtues and problems with social software in the academy. The session went well, but was a long day. The boy spent time at Camp Menehune...7 hours of internment, but seems it was ok except for the minor foot wound had on the slide. The price we pay for fun.
Oh yeah, the pics. Trade winds blowing, a swell running, and offshore winds makes me happy...no wait, sad because I had to work instead of surf. Oh well, manana perhaps...
Greetings from Waikoloa on the Big Island. Here for a conference, brought the boy for his first trip to Hawaii (I had to way until I was over 30 to make it here), and we're staying at the Hilton, which is kind of a gaudy, acid-trip haven for upper middle class midwesterners and Japanese. Crazy. Too hungry to write, so just a few pics. Rest assure that there will be many photos...after all, its one of the things I do. Mahalo.
Same as the old year... (apologies to Pete Townsend).
Well, I hope not. '06 had some incredible highs (Sharon and China), but some vicious lows (coyote and the moving dad). '07 begins in a state of confusion, but that has to be ok because it is what it is. Resolutions? Meditate more. Get back to China. Create. Keep walking. Work to find Grace. Wo ai ni, Xian.
Shots from the walk to and from Peets today. Winter sun is wonderful...
should be easier, not harder. too much to think about. too many parameters. ok, i'm out. extract, text track, strip the audio. picture lock. taking stock. not as advertised. project sucks. can i go now? ok, i'm out.
Always liked this shot. Far from perfect, but very much the moment. Sim buy. Shanghai.
here comes the flood
you're banking dark
such a stark
reminder of the days we left behind
