bar brat q

After dropping S off at LAX (off to various bits of Europe), the boy and I continued on south to a farewell bbq for a Pelican. The sad story is that Shawn and his family moved out here from Indiana as his company was setting up a new operation in Irvine. After being here two week, the company said, "just kidding", and told him they were moving everything (including million $ lathes) back to Indiana. Nice. So a group of up gathered at Ralph's house in Ranch Santa Margarita (hey, there's a lake there) to eat brats and toast the family. Welcome to California, now go home!

chose your daddy

Women can work out whether a man will make a good father just by looking at his face, research shows. Simply studying a photograph can give them subconscious clues that he likes children - and would therefore be a good long-term partner. Scientists behind the discovery believe it adds an important dimension to knowledge about mate selection among humans. Experts say women judge a man on his genetic quality and also his willingness to be a good parent for her offspring.

The 160 centimeter-tall EveR-1 weighs 50 kilograms and has facial and physical features of a Korean woman in her early 20s, KITECH said. It can recognize 400 Korean words, and can answer questions both verbally and through facial emotions, according to KITECH.

old and tired

Well, finally made it back into kung fu class tonight. A long layoff what with Shanghai and racing. And barely made it today what with meetings and class and quick road trips. My hip is still tender and was giving me pause, and so was my out-of-shape wind. Uggh. Then we did this tiger set where you spin around. From the road trip I got sorta carsick trying to email while riding. The spinning tiger stuff sunk me. Barely made it through the rest of class. Then come home and collapse. Hopefully Saturday will be better...

coffee house etiquette

OK...I need a reality check on whether this is rude or not. I am a regular at my local Peets...once, sometimes twice a day. I often will meet a buddy after work (around 5pm) and we'll have a cup and shoot the breeze for an hour or so. Sometimes I'll go on a weekday mid-afternoon to write, but usually stay no more than 2 hours, and it is never packed. I have friends who write in coffee shops too, but they don't stay for the whole day solid, and are respectful (and struggling artists, but that's another story).

justifiable caricide

Ok...so I don't sleep very well. Usually I have a tough time going to sleep, and wake at the slightest thing. So tonight I actually get to sleep early (really rare), only to have a car alarm go off. No biggie...it'll shut off after a few minutes.

WRONG. Been honking for going on 45 minutes now. I would take my bat and smash it to bits but it is in the underground structure of the apartment building across the street. Best I could do is empty a couple of clips of 9mm jacketet hollow point ammo into it. I'm not sure that would take out the alarm though. Only hope would be to hit the gas tank and have it blow up hollywood-style. But then the fire department would have to come, cops would investigate, I'd end up in jail. Big inconvenience. But who would convict me?

shooting acm in romania

Sometimes dreams are just short snippets...or at least that's all I remember. Other times they are sweeping epics. Still others are disjointed, oblique trips....Dali meets Hendrix. So this morning I'm going with a crew to shoot the movie version of a book called "ACM" in Romania. Why Romania? Well, I was reading about it in my "Torque" magazine (for Triumph owners), and it's far away. ACM? Have no clue...there is an academic society with that acronym (Association for Computing Machinery), but no book.

Well, day 2 in "paradise." The water is warm, but the wireless isn't, and the traffic was...umm...how can I say this....F*CKED! Decided to take a trip to Hanalei today. The drive back took 3 hours. Evidently there was a brush fire and an accident...and a 5 mile stretch through Kapa'a took literally 2 hours to drive. There is only one way around the island, so 2 lanes is it. Much worse that LA thank you...at least in LA you can find an alternate route. Oh well...good practice for being mellow. I didn't slam my fist on the wheel once. Now to do some prep for my talk tomorrow...gotta work!

Well, I'm in Kauai for a conference where I'm presenting at a workshop on social software in academia. And of course I left my preparation to the last minute. I did my notes using VooDooPad on the flight over, but need to hit the network to get the rest of the assets (photos from Flickr, logs from our SSAW wiki, etc). But lo and behold, my tre-expensive ocean front room (the only that were left...honest!) has non-functional wireless. So I'm in the "library" stealing an ethernet cable to get some of the work done...well, and post this. At least the view makes up for it. I'll be largely off-grid for the next few days, busy with conference stuff and lots of sleep.

got torture?

Back when I was a kid (6? 7?) I got caught lighting matches outside the house. Pretty common I think...most every kid does that, right? I recall having a conversation with my son about fire, the dangers, that he could get hurt, etc.

So what did my mom do? Sat me down at the fireplace with a case of matches. Sat there and made me light every single one of them, one after another. So here's poor me sitting there in tears lighting match after match while she watched over me.

My shrink gave a nice label to that piece of parenting: torture. So I got that going for me...

who are you

So my great grandfather was born Clemente Parashuta in 1871 in Russia. During "war" (I'm assuming WWI) he evidently took the dog tags from a dead German soldier (not clear if he killed him or not) and became John Olesi in order to escape Russia. He eventually ended up in Detroit, Michigan, living out his life as John Olesi.

So who are you?

oh no, no cell

Well I went and did it. I left the house without my cell phone. I'm at work now, following an uneventful ride into work. But as I got onto the 405 fwy this morning, I realized that I'd left my cell phone sitting on the bookcase at home. I pondered turning around and heading back, but I was already late for a meeting, so I had to forge on. Without my cell. Oh well, life is an experiment. And in the grand scheme of things, this doesn't even rate as a blip. Unless I have a nervous breakdown. In which case I have more problems than I thought...

why go to the park?

So today I'm at the park with my son. As usual he is off playing with some kid(s) he's befriended. They are playing a variation of "monkey in the middle" with a big soft ball (almost like a beach ball). There is a woman who is near me, and we are both sitting on a concrete "bench" that goes around the perimeter of one of the play areas where there is a structure and other things. As the kids are whacking the ball around, it goes over towards the woman and bounces right next to her. Now again, this is a very lightweight ball...if I threw it as hard as I could it wouldn't hurt you. She gets all pissy and says, "get away from here, this is the second time you've come close to me, go play somewhere else."

Umm...this is a playground. Full of kids. Wtf are *you* doing here?

December 04, 2005

you...are complex

I was reminded of one of my favorite movie quotes today:

Do you know what you've done? You've taken the greatest woman in the world and thrown her away. I lost her too, but I will get over it because I am shallow and self-centered. But you are "complex." You will feel great pain for the rest of your life. This is turning out to be pretty good day.

egad, that's dirty

This isn't going to be pretty...from the Houston Chronicle:

Drums full of hazardous medical waste and industrial chemicals float in the tainted floodwaters. As the water recedes, it leaves behind a sludge so laden with petroleum that federal officials are having trouble analyzing it. Millions of gallons of oil have spilled from refinery storage tanks. And at least one hazardous waste site — an old New Orleans landfill — is submerged, increasing the risk that chemicals buried long ago could escape.

These are the early signs of the environmental destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina, a storm that struck one of the most industrial and polluted areas of the country when it made landfall on the Gulf Coast. Along the hurricane's path sat 31 hazardous-waste sites and 466 facilities handling large quantities of dangerous chemicals. What impact — if any — the storm had on these areas is still being analyzed by the hundreds of personnel deployed, including those aboard mobile laboratories and in air-pollution-scanning aircraft.

happiest place on earth?

Spent today at Disneyland. It was my son''s 8th birthday. We were going to do a big Laser Tag party, but some bad behavior at school killed that plan, so instead we went to the "magid kingdom" with a friend of his and their family. Now let me preface this rant with the fact that I don''t like crowds. As such, I don''t really like theme parks. And I don''t like rampant commercialization. Well, I was 3-for-3 today.

spam, eggs, sausage and spam

So the latest trend in Spam is modified spelling of words. Most of the anti-Spam software algorithms look at word content, and by adding a number or a punctuation mark in the middle of a word, the spammers avoid the anti-Spam software. If only they could use all that ingenuity for something useful.
