Wilder

Last night was "The Apartment." Not what I expected, but quite amazing nonetheless. It has sent me on a Billy Wilder jag, ordering more of his films off Netflix, as well as a bit of a Lemmon bender. They don't make 'em like that any more (films or actors and directors).

hard driving

so many hard drives, so little enthusiasm for going through them...

October 5, 2009

hey, concerts!

One upside to cable - a new (to me) channel. Palladia in HD has music. That doesn't all suck. Tonight, catching the end of Elvis Costello and the attractions. Now to set the DVR for upcoming stuff...

elvis

No, not the king, but rather the second coming. I'd forgotten how big he was, and how good he still is. Sadly I missed his performance opening for the Police last year (while I hunted in vain for parking outside the Hollywood Bowl - note to self - take the shuttle next time). This one is a Nick Lowe penned tune, but it kicks arse... (and my take)

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

mister roberts

Jack Lemmon being...Jack Lemmon. Not quite as good as I remember though (the film, not Jack).

the early show

Hmm, not sure how long this picking the boy up at 3pm every Tu/Th is going to work. Though there is something positive about getting out of the office and working from home.

72 and counting

A whirlwind road trip to shoot (video/stills, not guns) at Camp Pendleton. What should have been a weekend off turns into a production whirlwind. That's what happens when incompetent idiots try to produce a video. While I have no problem with incompetent idiots producing video in general, I do take exception when the subject is *my* baby. We didn't pour our heart and soul into building a beautiful system only to have some hack make a video "documentary" that makes typical youtube fodder look like Kurosawa.

*sigh* It's off to FinalCut I go...

top of the world

Nice place for a wedding. Or most anything for that matter. I'm certainly not a wedding photographer in the strict sense. But then who wants to be strict?

bloody who

I was lucky enough to see The Who in '82, but wasn't lucky enough (or old enough) to see the original lineup circa 1970. But that's why god invented film. These guys were sick...

Leave cool in, or cut it out? That is the question. Apologies to Shakespeare.

Another day, another dog and pony. Another day, another conceptualization meeting. Another day another something. Better than the alternative.

the boys in the band

I'm pretty shy when it comes to walking up to people I don't know, but I'll make an exception every once in awhile. First was Michael Leonhart. Saw him wanting dinner before the SD show, didn't bug him then, but when he went to the gift shop after the concert I had to go up and thank him for the show. Then lo and behold a "power trio" of keyboardist Jim Beard, guitarist Jon Herington and drummer extraordinaire Keith Carlock. A quick thank you to them and they were off to do whatever musicians do after a show...not that I know anything about that.

taking the pulse

It is always interesting to hear what co-workers say about other co-workers. All while getting the pulse of the organization.

October 21, 2009

designing fun

"Serious games" are a challenge. First and foremost they have to teach, in our case, cognitive skills. The biggest fear is negative training, so you have to do your best to avoid all of that. And perhaps of equal importance is that it has to be fun. So let's see...has to be accurate, effective, avoid negative training, and be fun. Oh, and give reasonable throughput of players.

Yeah, that's simple...

not insured?

Funny what happens when you move. Things fall through the cracks. Like the motorcycle insurance. And of course the customer service isn't open on Sunday and the web site won't finish the transaction. Guess no ride today...

aperture vs lightroom

Digital Asset Management. Dam. Damn. I have too many photos, and no software is perfect. At what point do you jump ship from one product to another. For the record, Aperture *still* doesn't support one of my two cameras even though it has been out for well over a year. And they didn't support another one I had for awhile. Or another one. The alternative, Lightroom, suffers from the usual Adobe interface issues, feels slow and kludgy, and requires learning a new UI. But now I'm going through 5+ years of images creating a master archive and backup, so if I'm going to create new libraries now is the time. Sigh...

October 27, 2009

snow loser

I am generally a big fan of Apple stuff, but I will admit when they get it wrong. I moved from a two generation old MacBookPro (which I worked hard and it rarely faltered) to a new maxed-out MacBookPro (8Gig RAM, mmm) running 10.6.1 (Snow Leopard). What a steaming pile of crap. Well, not Vista-bad, but so far I am not happy. Multiple hard crashes when trying to access some of my external FW drives. Applications not running (Final Draft for one - how can I work on scripts?!?). And the worst insult - Quicktime X. Gone is QT pro with the ability to view and edit myriad formats and codecs. Instead replaced by a "clean interface" that won't run my FRAPS AVI files, won't deal with mp4 files, and is just garbage. I now have to install a "special" version of QT7 pro from the system DVD (which IT didn't give to me so now they have to find it).

I should have just kept my old machine...bastards. 10.6.2 better be around the corner and be better. A *lot* better.

October 28, 2009

steaming pile

Of SNOW CRAP!!!

Now TextEdit won't run. The lowliest app of the bunch. Hangs and dies a slow death. incomprehensible how bad this is. I can't fucking work. And I have work to do. That can't get done. I sense a pattern here...

Bastards, Apple....FIX IT!

October 29, 2009

some is forgiven

After wiping the hard drive clean and reinstalling, my shiny new mac is actually running and I can get some work done. I managed to use the "migrate" tool and it automatically transferred all my old stuff as well. The only niggle is that I couldn't use boot camp to partition the drive to install XP, so I'll do one more round of wipe, partition, install SL, install XP, work, work, work.

Faith is restored. Well, for now...
