bringing it

Unlike the last few gigs, a club date with a 30 minute time slot. This time with the IDC funk band, and going on at 8:30. By contrast, the jazz/sad bastard gigs (with Sam) are very low stress, and usually very long - easily go 4 hours of playing. The PIF gigs are a little tighter at usually a 75 minute set or so, but again very low stress and no competition - just playing for an appreciative audience.

Tonight though - have 30 minutes to make your mark, and there are other bands following. Maybe it is wrong of me, but in these cases my goal is to go for the throat and make it so that the other bands can't really follow you. And we pretty much did just that. No messing around, no long breaks between songs, and we cranked it out. They told us "one more song" when we had 4 more, so we picked the last tune, finished it, and the crowd wanted more. So on to the encore, and really go in for the kill. Fun times...

day, what day?

A rare "day off" - no gigs, no rehearsal, no huge fires burning at work. What to do...oh wait, where did the day just go?

Well, Dulles actually...

Again - DC and Quantico. This is getting old...but at least Virgin American has wifi.

more travel

Sooooooo sick of traveling.

May 6, 2010

where's the money

ok, we got the first half. Where's the second half? How many times do I have to write this budget?!?

May 7, 2010

taking it back

Well, just when you think that things are stable, someone points out that the rug you're standing on is being held by someone who likes to pull it. As in out from under you. Perhaps time to curtail spending. And panic. Never too early to panic...

jazzin it

PR takes a stab at some standards - on guitar. Gotta start some time...

triple booked

Originally it was to be 3 gigs (one on guitar, two on bass) then rehearsal but I got a brief moment of sanity and begged out of the morning session. As it turned out a pair of gigs followed by a rushed trip to the west side to drop off the boy followed by a rushed fast food dinner followed by rehearsal in a non-AC studio was enough to pretty much knock me out. And tomorrow the work continues. Sigh. At least the boy now has another two gigs under his belt, one of which had a few tunes of bass, cajon and vocal. No place to hide on that instrumentation...

May 10, 2010

And the prep for the tournament continues, tonight with about a half our of straight sword - using the metal (read:heavy) one. Uggh, my elbow protests. Along with the rest of me.

May 11, 2010

I feel the boy's pain. Piano lesson tonight, with pretty much the whole thing having him sight read a new piece of music. Struggling with that to some extent myself, I understand the frustration. But if he sticks with it, he'll be a happy camper. It is just pushing through until you get to that point where it becomes automatic. Sometimes I with I was automatic...

fact and fiction

When you're in (or around) the technology sector, it is a constant battle between fact (of what the technology can do) and fiction (of what people say the technology can do). When you have to actually produce something in the end, you generally find out the real story. Sadly, a happy ending often is elusive. The trick is to try and figure out when someone saying, "oh yeah, it can do that" really knows what they're talking about...

late but funky

How long does it take to get from Santa Monica to Hollywood on a Thursday evening? About 1.5 hours. The only positive was that we was funky and the by-product of playing a lot is that chops get honed. I'm all about the hone.

propose this

and propose that...just keep writing proposals until something gets funded...

May 15, 2010

come and go

I had 10 years of a stable bass rig, only to have GAS and TB infect me. The TC RH450 was the first salvo replacing my long-standing Ashdown ABM-500 head, but it had issues from day one. Following zero dealer support and a month at the repair shop, a new head finally was sent. By that time though, I'd moved on to other things. Feh, I don't like the ├╝ber high tech stuff anyway...

So off to the new owner it goes...

May 17, 2010

and so it begins

Yes, after a few years you have to end up recycling blog titles. The week begins, with contracting snafus that need to be undorked, and proposals that need to be written. But I need to woodshed tunes and transcribe "Gaucho." Pesky day job...

May 19, 2010

No love from the Claritin, so now on to Flonase. Oh, and the obligatory CT scan to make sure that the sinuses are really the problem. Ahh, modern medicine. Evidently I need to live somewhere with lest dust/pollen and more humidity. Umm...no. Well, wait, I suppose Hawaii has more humidity...

welcome to...

...the land of the all-day meeting. Well, it feels that way at least...

May 22, 2010

another day

Another gig. Me and the boy before the rest of the crew shows up. Kinda limited what you can do with just bass and cajon, but that never stopped us before.

May 23, 2010

Impending rehearsals and gigs, so much shedding to be done. For the past few days, charting and running Steely Dan tunes in advance of a full rehearsal with the Steely Jam. And today, running tunes with Harry (me on guitar) for an upcoming party where I'm on the spot to entertain. Much work to be done...and hopefully we won't have to trot out too many of the old warhorse tunes. I really don't want to have to do Louie Louie or Gloria, do I?

May 24, 2010

all the notes

Always good when you get an advance email saying, "we'll run songs x, y, and z," and then when you show up for rehearsal they say, "ok, let's do the whole setlist." Not such a big deal if you're talking some 1-4-5 classic rock stuff. Quite another when it is Steely Dan's book, including tracks like Gaucho and Aja. Well, I do love a challenge...oh, and it went fine.

Code for "new bass day." Ordered a new Rob Allen back in January, and it came to fruition today. As usual, Rob does amazing work...

How does this clutter pile up? I swear that I keep throwing stuff out and selling stuff yet it keeps stacking up. Arrgh...

May 26, 2010

last class

Well, not last class ever, but last one before the tournament. Uggh...I suppose I better practice between now and Satuday.

May 28, 2010

transcodification 2

Yes, another day spent transcoding video files. If only I'd kept the final outputs of the last batch...but I can't remember which ones got changed and far be it from me to actually keep notes or anything...

May 29, 2010

another first

Well, never too late to try something for the first time. Certainly not the first time doing martial arts - been doing that on and off (sadly more off than on) since I was a teen. Rather, a first time competing in a proper tournament. Just had to remember to breathe...

May 30, 2010

the right tools

Tools or toys? Never quite sure, but certainly a musician needs tools to make music. The question is what tools, what application, and how much is too much. If only there were more funds...

May 31, 2010

right time, wrong place

How does 2 gigs turn into 3? When you're at the right place but not the right place. PIF gigs at the VA hospital today, with the first one at "building 215." Pull up to the parking lot, and see a gathering outside with a stage setup. Keyboard player is there, says someone said this is the place. Who am I to argue? I look at the actual building but think, "eh, we've played outdoors before." The rest of the band is late but that isn't rare. We ending doing bass, keys, vocal and horns for about a half hour. Then one of the other band guys comes over and says, "the gig is inside the building - where have you guys been?" Oops. Hustle the gear inside, play a few tunes, then pack up and head to the second gig (well, technically third for some of us). Sigh.
