One of the more depressing or interesting places to be depending on your point of view.

Netflix comes through again...this time with season three of MASH (tv version). This on the heels of MASH (movie). Interesting to see how the tv show borrows from the film as well as the difference in vibe/feel. Very nice to be able to watch the shows again without them being cut to shreds to make room for syndication commercials...

Another plane heading east with me in it. Sigh.

tale of two hotels

First, there is the Hampton Inn in Fredericksburg, VA. Under $100 a night, comfy bed with nice down comforter, flat screen, spacious bathroom with brand new fixtures, standalone sink, etc. Very nice. Of course that was last night, and tonight is...another night. Best Western Tysons Westbrook (near IAD). The "special" rate of $159. Double bed, old school tv, older bathroom. None of those a deal breaker. But I've been in my room for 2 hours now with the "heater" going full blast and I'm still freezing. Of course if you stand up the top of the room is toast...but bed level is in the 50's I'd guess. Of course that is much better than the 20F or so (with 20mph wind) outside. I can hear the wind howling through my window sill. Weatherstripping? What is that? Brrr...

Following a frigid hotel room and 5K+ miles of business travel, the obligatory head cold. Super!

The one window of sunshine (or at least no rain) and I'm sick on the couch. No ride for the wicked. Or much of anything else for that matter. Might as well bring the rain back as I don't think I'm going anywhere...

war pigs

Funny the things you learn sometimes. I had grown up hearing the Black Sabbath song, "War Pigs," and always assumed it was an anti-war tune (which it is). Little did I know that war pigs are actual things though. Turns out that they are an early example of unconventional warfare practiced over 2K years ago. When armies used to use elephants as an offensive weapon, opponents would grease a pig and light it on fire while herding it towards the elephants. The pachyderms would freak out at the sight and sound of the pig, and take off. There also was mention of incendiary monkeys in China. The things that war fosters...

Leave it to politicians to come up with idiotic phrases. "Mission accomplished" was a fun one, and Obama has me pretty annoyed with his "crisis into catastrophe" fearmongering. And this today reminded me of a Gore gem. *sigh*

in the box

Another full day of meetings to figure out what goes in the boxes and how it gets done. To quote Barbie (when talking about math), "this is hard."

At least drinks at the end of the day were festive. How often do you get to talk with a guy who has jumped out of a 747 and B52?

Dinner for 3 at a throwback eatery in Eagle Rock. Caruso's is certainly living in another decade - probaby 50's or 60's if I had to pick one. The food was ok but the atmosphere was pretty amazing. Quite the mix of old school mafiosos, aging hipsters and younger I'm-not-sure-what. Have to go back there for drinks sometime (sans the boy) to soak up the scene.

A big storm on the way, but I've heard that before. It would be nice to get a good stiff rain as it works as a sleep aid. But it seems over-rated so far...as usual

fish bones

A delicious dinner by st, with the only downside being a few bones in the steamed fish. OK once I figured out they were there, and actually most were in the first bite. Quite yummy though (the fish, not the bones) and extra points for bonito shavings. xie xie.

huffington fox

I have a pretty diverse set of friends (many of them digital). Since online discussions tend to run the gamut, I get a ton of links to various "evidence" and "facts" during the course of things. Seeing as though this group goes from hard left to hard right, I get pointed to myriad sources. What I have come to conclude is that Huffingtonpost is essentially the same as Foxnews (and vice versa). While Huffington might have more eloquent prose, when you get down to the core messages and tactics, they are identical - just alternate faces of the coin. One views north, the other south. So I reject them both. More efficient.

Oh, and dailykos = drudge. Both complete wastes of time filled with possibly the most biased nonsense I've seen. Makes me long for the Weekly World News...

aboutface (book)

I removed my photos from facebook today, and deactivated my account. A couple of drivers in that. First, the new terms of service and privacy agreement is annoying and offensive. I'm tired of people thinking they own everything. And more broadly...what's the point? Sure, great to connect with old friends but I really didn't do that on facebook. I see the utility as a "social tool" and if I were looking for work I'd leverage it. But at this point it is more like being back in high school and everyone is worrying about what everyone else is doing. My life is public enough - do I really need yet another flashlight on my experience? Maybe it is too many years of digital living, but I'm pulling back into analog more and more. I'll keep this blog going as it is *mine* and is an outlet for things I create. But facebook/linkedin/twitter/etc? See ya...

February 23, 2009

All day meetings are an interesting phenomenon. I had someone actually mention that they had never been in one or think that they existed. I've been in plenty, as when you're breaking story or spitballing or blue skying (or any other number of verbicized nouns), it takes time. In general I've found that mornings are the most productive portion, with the expected lag after lunch and then another burst. But around 3pm the energy starts lagging and eventually burn out is the order of the day. Luckily drinks in the evening seem to recharge at least some of the people. Because we do it again the next day...

how did that happen?

So you have this plan to get back from a work trip early and perhaps avoid the office and perhaps run and errand or three. But for some reason you go into the office (as your co-worker's cars are there) and end up checking email then end up sending email then end up in people's offices putting out fires then...then...

Where did the day go?

monkey business

Thankfully somethings transcend generations. A little Monkey Business with the boy tonight. He laughed quite a bit. Though he didn't understand why Harpo kept chasing women around. Still a few more years (months?) of relative innocence...
